A Canvas of Music

On the floor, I stand
motionless
soaking in the rhythm
absorbing the beats
feeling the music from within.

My hips are the first to move
to the rhythmic muse
pulsing through my body.

My legs are next
steps that match
the sway to my hips.

My back and shoulders respond
with a lift and a twist.
Following suit, my arms
stay in flow with the tempo.

My body a canvas of music
dancing across the floor

movements of unison
steps of beat
a slow shake of the hip
a shoulder curls
as an arm carves the
rhythms in the air.

My body a canvas of music
the music my muse
dancing across life’s stage.

I wake up
sadly realizing
it was all a dream.

~I was a dancer and now I dream of dancing. I can still dance with my upper body with no problem but that is not the case for the lower half. I have a right leg and hip that are week and have some balance difficulties all from the progression of Multiple Sclerosis. One of my goals is to dance like I used to again. It can be done with patience, time, and hard work.  :)

A  video of me reading A Canvas of Music.  :)I finally figured out how to read them without extra.
A new video 12/5/10

please inform me if the video does not work :)

Struggled to play the video, froze on me after 15sec. I'll come back to it. Great poem, tough ending, but it's yours.

I hope you will dance again - so happy you dance in your dreams, and in these words on the screen, you dance, for certain. Well done!

Strong, thematically-compact dance imagery builds ably to a heart-pounding sad crash. Effective, solid work.

I know in part what that feels like . I am a singer and there was a period of time I could not sing. The sound moves through your bloodstream as I know the fluidity does.

What a beautiful poem - I hope that you are free to dance with all of your heart very soon.

Thanks for sharing with One Shot

Wonderful...and if it can be envisioned, it can be realized. The video of you reading your poem is so interesting--I wonder how it was done. At first I couldn't tell that that it was you in the upper left hand corner, but then I could see you quite clearly...and you are lovely.

Dear River,
Loved the poem, the reading...
From pain and loss, you have risen like a phoenix.

I look forward to your poem, and one day - your dance.

Great reading for a wonderful poem. Agree with the previous comments, "my body is a canvas" is an incredible line, through which you combine many arts in your poem. cheers

Thank you for your wonderful comments. When I was dancing (outside my living room) people would say I made the music visual. I was thinking of those words and where the body is in the equation when "my body is a canvas" popped in my head. It made so much sense with dance and in my life. Thank you again everyone! :)

I once dreamt that I was pregnant, and I was so happy and making all of my plans. I felt so fulfilled, so right. Then I woke up and realized I had only been dreaming and i was terribly sad for a while, as if I had lost that child I dreamt I carried. And yet, I am still so glad I had that dream.

Keep dancing, River, how ever you have to do it. :-)

I saw that I had commented on this before but this means so much more now that I know a bit more about you. Yes, nothing can stop your spirit. MS is such a cruel disease. I'm a nurse and have worked with it over the years. There has been some progress, but not enough. All the neuro disorders are so confounding. Beautiful poetry from a beautiful spirit.

damn! i mean, DAMN! i listened to the recording (managed to do that after patiently waiting for the entire file to load, then pressed on play - suggestion for other future readers), and not only that this poem was alive when i first read it (yeah, first) but i felt as if suddenly i was pointed towards a new dimension...i simply SAW it. all. and felt it. deeply. this is excellent and vivid and painful...
